Massachusetts Lawmakers Propose Property Tax Relief for Veterans

New Bill Would Expand Tax Benefits for Local Veterans

In a bid to honor those who have served, Massachusetts lawmakers have introduced new legislation aimed at increasing property tax relief for veterans. The proposal, filed for consideration in the 2025 legislative session, seeks to build on the existing state exemptions by making it easier for local municipalities to double the property tax exemption or tie it to inflation rates, boosting benefits for veterans and their families.

Local Commitment and HERO Act Provisions

The proposal comes as local towns like Belchertown consider adopting new provisions under the state’s HERO Act, passed in 2024. If approved, measures like Clauses 22I and 22J would allow for significant increases in property tax exemptions at the town level, with Belchertown estimating it could grant nearly $60,000 in additional relief to eligible veterans in the first year alone.

Who Qualifies

Massachusetts veterans qualify for varying levels of property tax relief based on their service and disability status—ranging from $400 up to full exemption for surviving spouses of service members killed in action. Key eligibility criteria include Massachusetts residency, ownership and occupancy requirements, and documentation of service-connected disability for higher exemption tiers.

Next Steps

Advocates believe the proposal will provide meaningful support for those who served and call for swift action in the legislature. Municipalities are encouraged to review their current exemption rates, and veterans are urged to contact their local Assessor’s Office for more details.
