Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is taking legal action after a man, described as “completely drunk,” groped and tried to kiss her during a public walk in Mexico City. The incident—captured on video and widely shared online—shows Sheinbaum startled but composed as she quickly pushes the man’s hands away while an aide intervenes. The suspect was promptly arrested and linked to additional harassment cases reported the same day.
“If This Happens to the President, What About Other Women?”
Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, used her daily news conference to put the encounter in context. “If this can happen to the president, what can we expect for all the young women in our country?” she asked, stressing that this incident is symbolic of the harassment and violence faced by women across Mexico. Sheinbaum confirmed that she will “review the legislation so that this crime is punishable in all 32 states” and called for a national education campaign to promote respect for women’s rights.
Calls for Legal Reform and Women’s Safety
Rights advocates and ordinary citizens have responded with outrage, citing widespread daily harassment faced by women in Mexico, where prosecution of gender-based crimes remains uncommon. Sheinbaum’s administration is now pushing to strengthen sexual harassment laws nationwide and ensure safer public spaces. “This is an issue of dignity for women and of recognizing our rights,” Sheinbaum stated.
President Remains Committed to Public Engagement
Despite the incident, Sheinbaum emphasized she would not distance herself from citizens or change her approach to public life. “We cannot distance ourselves from the people,” she said, reaffirming her commitment to openness and grassroots engagement as a leader.
