A new report from Navy Federal Credit Union exposes widespread and persistent misconceptions about VA home loans among service members and veterans, highlighting challenges in how many understand or access these key benefits.

What Veterans and Service Members Misunderstand

While 92% of survey respondents said they were aware of VA loans, nearly half did not know that VA loans typically provide lower interest rates than conventional loans, and a large majority—55%—believe a down payment is required. In reality, VA loans can finance up to 100% of a home’s sale price with no down payment, and rates are often at least 0.25% lower than conventional mortgages. The majority of borrowers report confusion stemming from unofficial sources or advice from family and friends, rather than turning to official VA or military resources for guidance.

The Role of Realtors and Information Gaps

Only 39% of veterans and service members rely primarily on official sources for VA loan details. Others depend on personal research (20%) or family (9%), leading to at least two persistent misconceptions per eligible borrower. While most military homebuyers rate Realtors as “knowledgeable,” more than a quarter still struggle to find agents well-versed in military needs, adding further barriers to home buying.

Satisfaction and Recommendations

Despite these misunderstandings, satisfaction among those who use VA loans is high: over 90% said they were happy with their VA-backed mortgage and would recommend it to others. Navy Federal urges eligible members to consult their site and official VA sources to maximize benefits and make better-informed home buying decisions.

Why Outreach Matters Now

With the housing market remaining competitive, the difference between the right information and outdated myths can mean thousands of dollars in savings for veterans and families. Navy Federal Credit Union hopes this report will spur renewed efforts toward education, better agent training, and outreach to military homeowners nationwide.
